Choosing the perfect poetry or prose for inclusion in your ceremony is not easy. Firstly, there is the problem that there is just so much to choose from. There is also the question of who will read it. You may want to read something yourselves, to ask a family member, friend or guest to read something out or to ask one of us to read it as part of the service.
You will also need to think about when the reading will appear in the ceremony and what mood and tone it will set. For example, a humorous rhyme used early on in the ceremony might fit perfectly if light-hearted fun characterises the ceremony. Alternatively, a recitation of a Shakespearean sonnet, would fit well with a much more formal or traditional ceremony. For a funeral, perhaps a poem that was a favourite of your loved one or that reflects how they would like to be remembered would be more appropriate.
It is also important to pay close attention to the words. Many people's favourite love songs are about love that did not work for one reason or another - have another listen to those lyrics! These songs express a sentiment about love which you may identify with but a song about breaking up is not one for your ceremony and the same is true of poetry!
To make it easier for you to select a reading that perfectly fits what you are looking for we have included some options below. We hope you enjoy them as much as we did when reading and recording them! We have many different poetry books between us and love reading poetry ourselves, so can usually help you find that at least 3-4 different poems that we think will be a good fit so that you can consider and choose from those.
Of course, not everyone wants to include poetry in their ceremony and that is absolutely fine; song lyrics, readings from a book or listening to a meaningful piece of music can all help to set the tone and be just as beautiful within a ceremony. Your day- your choice!
